Reviews
Lovely cozy renovated country gite
Review written by Shelley & Perry (New Brunswick, Canada)
We have stayed in the gite in St. Ferriol for two years in a row now 2011, 2012 for a month each time with our little boy when he was 1 and 2 years old and it has been a wonderful peaceful experience and it is a great central location for exploring Cathar castle country. The gite owner lives close by and is always very friendly and welcoming and able to help. We have rented other places in France but love this gite.
We can't wait to return again.
The gite is in a very central location to explore. Within two hours you have about a dozen abbeys and equal numbers of castles to explore and lots of outdoor activities - hiking, horseback riding, river rafting, biking. There are great local markets on Saturday and Wednesday in nearby Quillan and a big market in nearby Esperaza on Sunday. Within two and half hours you can be on the Mediterranean shore for a day trip, or driving through the Pyrenese Mountains to the neighbouring Ariege province.
The gite has a lovely cozy ambiance with a nice mix of old and new. It is a completely renovated three story village house - redone plaster walls, ceilings with exposed wooden beams, terra cotta tile floors. But it has great modern touches - lovely soaker tub upstairs, modern spacious shower, comfortable beds, dishwasher. The kitchen is well appointed if you like to cook.
Given the various levels there is enough space for privacy as well. The gite is also equipped with baby gates on the stairs and has a baby cot. For toddlers there are bed rails.
The gite is located in a small village in the hills and the scenery is very pastoral and beautiful. The local villagers are very friendly. You can often buy eggs from the family next to the gite. There are lots of paths for walking. There is a lovely ambiance to living in a rural village like this - cows in the pasture with cow bells, the rooster crowing in the morning and the church bells.
I would strongly recommend the gite in St. Ferriol for anyone wanting a cozy, comfortable, quiet, safe, centrally located place to use a base to explore or even to just come and relax.
