Bourganeuf
Historic Bourganeuf
Review written by PJ (St Dizier Leyrenne, France)
A very popular attraction close to Les Granges Gite in St Dizier Leyrenne, is Bourganeuf, a remarkable medieval fortified town with a castle and the church of St Jean. The unique historic stronghold was originally constructed between 1150 - 1160 AD by the legendary Knights Templar.
A tower was added in the late 14th century by Guy de Blanchefort, the nephew of Pierre L'Aubusson, the grand master of the Order of Templars. Shrouded in mystery and intrigue. It was specifically erected to keep a valuable hostage brought back from the crusades, a prince and heir to the Ottoman empire, named Zizim. The castle is also connected to speculation and rumours involving the elusive Holy Grail. There is also a large supermarket with fuel station, plus a variety of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants in the vibrant town centre, along with an excellent local market, a very informative tourism office, cinema and a fascinating museum of electrification.
